Conference Review | the Second Digital Economy and the Future Rule of Law Summit

On December 8, 2019, the Second Digital Economy and the Future Rule of Law Summit was successfully convened in Beijing. Co-hosted by Renmin University of China and JD.com Group, the event was organized by the Renmin Law and Technology Institute and JD Legal Research Institute. More than 50 domestic and foreign experts and scholars from government agencies, courts, academia and industry attended and delivered speeches, while hundreds of guests and on-site participants listened to the discussions.The opening ceremony of the forum was presided over by Professor Wang Yi. It featured a special keynote speech by Zhang Qiong, former Deputy Director of the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China. Professor Du Peng and Ms. Li Yayun delivered opening remarks respectively. Nine domestic and foreign experts and scholars including Director Fu Wenbiao, Mr. Zhang Xinhong, Deputy Director-General Wei Li and Professor Eric Hilgendorf gave keynote speeches covering topics such as internet platform governance, development trends and impacts of the digital economy, internet public interest litigation, personal information protection and the fair review system. More than forty experts and scholars from China, the United States, Germany, Israel, Switzerland, Denmark and other countries took part in roundtable discussions themed，for example, "Internet Competition and Consumer Protection", "Online Platforms and Modern Governance", "Cybersecurity and Personal Information Protection", and "Digital Economy Development and Prospects for the Future Rule of Law". The Dean’s Forum session was hosted by Professor Yang Dong. Five renowned domestic law school deans — Professors Kong Xiangjun, Wang Xigen, Long Weiqiu, Mei Xiaying and Yin Fei — together with two vice presidents of internet courts, Vice Presidents Ni Defeng and Tian Hui, participated and delivered speeches. Finally, the closing ceremony was chaired by Associate Professor Wang Ying, with closing addresses delivered by Mr. Su Wang and Professor Du Huanfang. In addition, the forum launched the Internet Rule of Law Blue Book (2019) jointly compiled by the Renmin Law and Technology Institute and JD Legal Research Institute. It also provided participants with reference materials: Volume I and Volume II of the Cyberlaw Reading Group Series under the Renmin Law and Technology Institute, namely Legal Research on Privacy and Data and Legal Research on Artificial Intelligence, as well as the Compilation of EU Data Protection Laws and Regulations, co-edited by the Internet Law Research Center of China Academy of Information and Communications Technology and JD Legal Research Institute.
