Background

In recent years, the Internet, big data, artificial intelligence, block chains, the Internet of Things and other science and technology have been developed rapidly, and have already been widely applied to society with unimaginable speed, breadth and depth. This will bring unprecedented changes to society, as well as great opportunities and challenges to global rule of law.

On September 8, 2017, the Law School of Renmin University of China established the Renmin Law and Technology Institute, focusing on the challenges brought by the new round of scientific revolution and the major frontier issues emerging in social development in the field of rule of law. The Institute will actively promote the integration and reconciliation of law, contemporary scientific and technological development and judicial practice, constructing a research and education platform, which can respond to the new problems brought by scientific and technological revolution, explain judicial practice and legal system and bring a profound influence on global academic development.

At present, the Renmin Law and Technology Institute has many outstanding scholars with interdisciplinary background, overseas education background and diverse experience on working and academic. Their academic research interests include personal information protection and data governance, artificial intelligence and legal regulation, platform responsibility and platform regulation, financial technology and technology-driven regulation, cyber crimes and cyber security, intelligent judicial theory and technology, etc.

Development Planning and Mission

The Renmin Law and Technology Institute will conduct various activities such as thematic seminars, frontier lectures, reading group on specific topic, curriculum reform and foreign exchanges so as to discuss the legal theory and the analytical framework and research methods of legal issues in the new technological revolution, and to respond to the challenges brought by the revolution with legal regulations and judicial practices, as well as to explore the way of cultivating high-quality interdisciplinary legal talents who master the new technology.

The Renmin Law and Technology Institute aims to become an influential research platform worldwide which closely integrates new technology with law, cultivates future leaders in the field of law.
