On the afternoon of April 11, 2019, Yoon Sun-hee, Professor of the Hanyang University Law School and President of the Korean Intellectual Property Law Association, was invited to deliver a lecture titled International Intellectual Property Strategies and Dispute Resolution at Lecture Hall 725, Mingde Law Building, for the Renmin University International Frontier Forum on Intellectual Property. The forum was co-hosted by the Center for Intellectual Property Academy and the Renmin Law and Technology Institute, Renmin University of China. This session was presided over by Zhang Jiyu, Dean of the Renmin Law and Technology Institute, Renmin University of China. Kim Won-oh, Vice President of the Korean Intellectual Property Law Association and Professor of Inha University; Xiao Youdan, Research Fellow of the Institute of science and technology policy and management science, Chinese Academy of Sciences; Si Chunlei, Research Fellow of the Institute of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies, Zhejiang University; Professor Wan Yong from the Renmin University of China Law School; and Associate Researcher Peng Yaojin from the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the event and took an active part in themed discussions.

      Professor Yoon first elaborated on a series of topics including the significance of intellectual property rights, the shift of intellectual property strategies from passive response to proactive layout, the evolution of intellectual property operation models, and factors affecting corporate intellectual property strategies. Afterwards, Professor Yoon introduced South Korea’s intellectual property strategies and corresponding objectives in recent years, as well as multi-level impacts and outcomes brought about by relevant policy trends.

      Professor Yoon then analyzed the underlying causes of the rising number of IP disputes. Taking the smartphone patent litigation between Apple and Samsung as a typical case, he dissected the core characteristics of contemporary IP conflicts and expounded key strategies and essentials for dispute response.

      After Professor Yoon finished his presentation, Professor Kim Won-oh, Research Fellow Xiao Youdan, Research Fellow Si Chunlei and Professor Wan Yong delivered in-depth discussions and supplemented relevant knowledge respectively. Afterwards, several students raised questions concerning intellectual property strategies and management, to which Professor Yoon provided detailed answers one by one.

      After the lecture, Dean Zhang Jiyu presented Professor Yoon with a commemorative plaque and poster for this event, as well as a certificate of honor to express gratitude for his participation in the forum. Professor Yoon extended his thanks to the Center for Intellectual Property Academy and the Renmin Law and Technology Institute of Renmin University of China for their warm reception, and invited all faculty members to visit Hanyang University.
